CBTF Testing Requirements
The Computer-Based Testing Facility (CBTF) exclusively supports testing on the PrairieLearn platform. To ensure a smooth testing experience, please note the following requirements:
- All testing materials must be housed in PrairieLearn, other external websites or systems are not supported.
- All tests scheduled within the CBTF must be scheduled on the companion PrairieTest system.
Test Duration Limits
To optimize usage of the CBTF, test durations are as follows:
- Weeks 1-10: 45 minutes or less
- Finals Week: 110 minutes or less
Test Sessions: Policies and Procedures
When testing at the CBTF, students are expected to follow our policies and procedures:
- Secure Personal Belongings: All test-takers must put away prohibited items and store personal belongings in lockers provided outside the lab. ID cards and writing utensils are the only items permitted.
- ID Checks: Test-takers must show a valid photo ID (UC San Diego student ID card or government-issued ID) before starting the test.
- Integrity Checks: TTC staff visually inspect testing stations before each session to ensure compliance with our policies.
- TTC-Provided Testing Aids: We provide scratch paper, a TI-34 calculator, and writing utensils. Students are not allowed to bring their own calculators nor scratch paper, as this may compromise test integrity. Note sheets are allowed within the PrairieLearn platform, but physical note sheets are not permitted.
- Late Policy: Students who arrive late will only be given until their scheduled end time. Reservations can be changed up to 10 minutes before the testing session, but seat availability is not guaranteed.
- Missed Reservations: Students who miss their reservation should email us at tritontesting@ucsd.edu for further assistance. Rescheduling missed tests is not guaranteed and opportunities to do so may be unavailable. Students should select a test time that works best for their schedule and plan on attending, as they would with any in-class exam.
- Bathroom Breaks: To maintain test integrity, bathroom breaks are not permitted once the test has begun, except for emergencies. Any instance of a student leaving the testing room before completing their assessment will be reported to the instructor.
- Proctors: All tests are proctored by a live proctor to ensure test integrity. Camera surveillance will be coming soon.
Instructor Responsibilities
Building Questions and Tests for the CBTF
Instructors must create their questions and tests on the PrairieLearn platform. There are many resources to help create and manage tests, including a variety of tutorial guides that have been developed by the TTC. These guides will aid instructors that have little to no background in programming to develop their test for the CBTF.
TTC Created Tutorial Guides:
- How to create a PrairieTest (PDF)
- How to create a multiple choice question (PDF)
- How to create multiple choice true or false questions (PDF)
- How to create a passage and prompt question (PDF)
Other Available Resources:

Connecting and Piloting Tests at the CBTF
Instructors must connect their tests to PrairieTest one day before the testing window is scheduled to open. Tests that are not connected at this time are subject to cancellation without the possibility of rescheduling. Each test must be piloted in the CBTF prior to the test being administered.
Course staff, with proper identification, are welcome to drop in during the CBTF’s operating hours to pilot their tests. Note that Mondays and Tuesdays are generally the quietest days in the lab.
Informing students to reserve their test on PrairieTest
If accommodated testing is required, we will register the test with the Triton Testing Center’s Pepper Canyon Hall location via the RegisterBlast system. Students are still required to schedule their test, however it will be done through RegisterBlast instead of PrairieTest.
A statement should be added to the course syllabus, announced in Canvas, etc. regarding scheduling tests at the TTC. We recommend disseminating this information as early in the quarter as possible and in advance of each testing window opening. Please see the below example:
Tests for this course will be administered by the Triton Testing Center (TTC) in the Computer-based Testing Facility in AP&M B349 and B432. The TTC's rules concerning tests are the rules for this course.
You must schedule your tests in advance, and is recommended that you do so as soon as possible. Scheduling for all tests opens on the first day of instruction. To schedule, visit PrairieTest and log in via Google with your UC San Diego credentials. More information about testing policies and procedures can be found on the TTC's website. You may also email tritontesting@ucsd.edu for assistance.
FOR STUDENTS WITH OSD APPROVED ACCOMMODATIONS ONLY: If you will be utilizing accommodations for your test, you will take it at the TTC's Pepper Canyon Hall 364 location. You must schedule your test at least three days in advance through the RegisterBlast system (login required). RegisterBlast scheduling is to be done ONLY by students with OSD-approved accommodations. Tests scheduled via RegisterBlast without accommodations will be canceled.
